I’m not a crafty person by nature, but I do like to make things now and then. The holidays are a perfect excuse to add a little hand-made love to gifts and decor, don’t you think?

I get really giddy when talented people tell me they are getting together with other talented people, because the result is usually pretty spectacular. The new shop Ship & Shape is just that- a shop offering stellar selections from a group of hand-picked artists and designers. From what I can tell, there’s always going to be something covetable at Ship & Shape!

The phrase “God is in the details” most certainly rings true for the freshly launched Cavalier Inaugural Collection. I’ve been anticipating more from Cavalier, and they did not disappoint.
Beyond the stunning lookbook, there’s a lot to explore. Some highlights:
+ Hand-stitched leather goods
+ A carefully curated Online Flea
+ Designer Mixtapes
+ Frequently updated Online Journal
You’ll find some really special pieces that would make great holiday gifts. I’m pretty much in love with this leather duffle, it’s the ultimate.

I’m a huge fan of many Woody Allen films. I realized, after seeing this, that I had enough songs to pull together a playlist. Let me tell you, I’ve been playing this non-stop. I play it when I get home from work and have found it pairs very nicely with good company and good wine.
The mix is great for the holiday weekend and is most certainly suitable for listeners of all ages. Hope you all enjoy!

What’s on the docket this weekend? I’m making some pumpkin pie tartlettes, watching Page One: Inside The New York Times, finishing the Jobs memoir and moving on to Didion’s Blue Nights. I love how shorter days gives one an excuse to hibernate and curl up with a book.
Until next week…

This chicken pot pie recipe makes your whole house smell so flippin’ good, you’ll want to dive head first into its buttery topping. Chicken pot pie always seemed like a cumbersome meal to put together, but this recipe from Sunday Suppers proves otherwise. I love the addition of root vegetables and sage, it’s sweet and savory all at once.
*Note: I have 16 oz ramekins and this recipe only fills two of them. But there is enough left over to fill four 4 oz ones, which I now jokingly call Savory Shooters. Hey, there IS wine in there somewhere. If you’ve got 8 oz ones, like most people do, you’re good to fill 4 of those.
Chicken Pot Pie with Root Vegetables, c/o Sunday Suppers
Serves 4

1 sweet potato, diced
1 parsnip, diced
2 sage leaves
5-6 mushrooms, diced
1 white onion, diced

1 tbsp. olive oil
1 tbsp. butter
2 chicken breasts, diced
½ c. parsley, chopped
2½ tbsp. flour
1 c. chicken stock
½ c. white wine
Premade puff pastry dough
1 egg,
plus 1 tbsp. water
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 400°. Saute potatoes, parsnip, sage, mushrooms, onion, and garlic in oil and butter over medium heat.
2. Season with salt and pepper to taste, allowing vegetables to sweat about 5 minutes.Remove vegetables and saute chicken breast 5 minutes.
3. Add vegetables, parsley, flour, stock, and wine. Simmer 5 minutes and season again with salt and pepper if necessary.
4. Fill four ramekins or baking cups with mixture and top each with a circle of dough about ¼-inch larger than the vessel.Brush tops with egg wash and sprinkle with coarse sea salt. Bake 15-20 minutes or until puffed and golden.

Recycling old technology is such a cool way to embrace where we’ve been and where we’re going. The add-ons may seem cumbersome, but there’s a lot of fun to be had with these products.

This might be the easiest salmon recipe, ever. It’s great for nights you just need to make a fresh meal for one, and it’s healthy too. Use whatever vegetables you fancy most, just make sure you julienne them nicely. You could also rub the salmon with a variety of spices, but in my humble opinion, a little salt and pepper is all you need.
Roasted Salmon in Parchment Paper
Serves 1
1 salmon fillet
Salt
Pepper
Dried thyme
A few slices of lemon
Red pepper
Zucchini
Kalamata olives
Drizzle of olive oil
Directions
Cut the vegetables into a julienne, and toss with olive oil, thyme, salt and pepper. Season salmon to taste. Put vegetables and salmon into a parchment bag, secure with twine. Bake at 350 for 12 minutes.

Music has always been an essential accompaniment to time spent in the kitchen. I cook more often during the colder months, so that’s what inspired this playlist. It’s a mixed bag of genres, with some toe-tapping jazzy tunes and a few super mellow tracks.
The gorgeous photo featured was shot by Caitlin of Roost, a graphic designer who runs one top-notch food blog. At first glance you’d never guess that her recipes are grain/gluten/sugar/dairy free. I’d highly recommend finding a new recipe to try, pouring a glass of wine, and listening these tracks. That’s what I’ll be doing tonight.

When you’ve lived in one of the coldest urban environments for the past 5 years, you witness how brutalizing the cold can be on your skin. Especially if you have dry skin, like moi.
I thought, in preparation for the colder months ahead, I would share a few skin-saving tips and a less traditional “In the Kitchen” feature, a recipe for a body scrub you can make at home.
Here are a few of my tried-and-true, Minnesota-proof skincare tips:
1. Don’t be afraid of oil-based body scrubs. This one leaves your skin feeling soft, moisturized, and clean. You can use this on your face, but it is best to avoid doing so in the winter. A gentler exfoliant would do just fine. I use a Clarisonic brush (and it works wonders). If you do use this scrub on your face, rub very carefully and avoid delicate dry spots, as it can be too harsh on sensitive winter skin. Follow with a thick moisturizer.
2. Keep a really great lip balm on hand. At all times. I’m forever a fan of Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment .
3. Facials. I save up for these indulgences over the summer because they are SO worth it! It’s a nice treat for the mind, body, and soul.
4. Moisturizing Masks. I use this biweekly. The trick is to not keep masks on too long, 10 minutes is all you need. Wash them off with a nice warm towel.
5. Consider a hydrating serum. I use Dior Hydra Life Serum. It has a lovely citrus-y smell.
6. Water. Most of us never get enough and a girls gotta protect her skin from the inside out.
Do you guys have any recommendations for protecting your skin against the elements?

Layering takes skill and a good eye, but I’m truly in awe of those women who can make the simplest looks effortless and current all at once.

love these simple cozy looks from ganni…

How many of you ladies steal your man’s comfy clothes on a chilly evening? The good news is that you now have another excuse to wear his garb outdoors, thanks to the resurgence of menswear-inspired women’s clothing. GQ recently did an interview with model Georgia Fowler on the subject, and I loved the casually chic styling. I’m really into that untied bowtie.
Menswear has influenced how I get dressed lately, especially with the help of Tomboy Style, and Girlsack. The courage to wear a tie is one thing I’m still working on, but the untied bowtie is an easier look for me. I’m all for adding feminine touches to menswear outfits, like a lacy bra or tiny gold bracelet, plus minimal makeup, natural lip, long lashes and tousled hair.
