to have and have not

we just returned from a wonderful, sunny weekend in chicago. saturday night we made dinner for my parents and watched one of my new favorite bogart movies: to have and have not. i came across this photo on the sartorialist tonight, and lingered on it for a moment. i just love that sassy look from the girl in the oxfords, reminds me of lauren bacalls’ character, “slim”.

definitely a must-see for film noir fans.

luxury as trash (or vice versa?)

there’s been some fun discussion over this photo, at jak & jil. the image has been circulating for some time, but i saw it for the first time this week. i think it’s brilliant. what do you think?

nautical living

the city of minneapolis is about as far from the coast as you can get, so you might be surprised to hear that we take recreational boating very seriously up here. we may not live near an ocean, but we aren’t lacking beaches and lakes. let’s just say that they weren’t kidding when they coined the phrase “land of 10,000 lakes”. we have more like 13,000.

now that the weather is getting warmer, i’m excited to spend as much time as i can on the water. this means i need to get my boating gear in order. so for all of us boat-loving gals, here’s some yummy nautical inspiration for your friday morning.

group two: stripey tee, antique wing chair, a stylish hat, beach cruiser, cute satchel, these amazing shoes, this whale pillow, carry-all bag

yellow + black + beige

yellow, black and beige is one of my all time favorite color combos. i love the contrast, the cheeriness, the vibrancy, and the way it makes my dark hair pop. i really love that couch, but i think a bright yellow scarf might be a more affordable way to add a yellow into my life, don’t you think?

images: yellow couch from carrie can, lovely yellow-beige combo from garance dore (love the fun sunglasses!), cozy bedroom via cumbersome,  vintage alarm clock from etsy shop space jam, two of my forever favorites from garance dore, this rustic styling, and of course, a funky, fluffy, classic louboutin.

primative collections

inspiring collections by museo ettore guatelli from world of interiors may 2010.

WOI quotes: “Ettore Guatelli ploughed a singular furrow, spending his life gathering tools from Italy’s agricultural past and turning his home, near Parma, into a museum of artfully arranged rural artifacts.”

I personally like this quote: “He was the Mother Teresa of things” (via weird friends).

we have a strategic plan.

* This post has been saved in my “Pending” folder for over a year because the posters had sold out in record time. BUT! I saw that these posters were back in stock today! *

i love this poster inspired by a swissmiss tweet. i was following her last week as she brought little bits of the 99% conference to the twitter world.

soft + sheer

it’s a little drizzly in the twin cities today and i have to say, i really don’t mind it. the light gray sky makes everything so soft and monotone. so in honor of my favorite kind of day- a few things soft, sheer and lightly gray.

the wild unknown

while i was browsing creature comforts’ blog last night, i clicked on the link for the shop the wild unknown, and immediately smiled. this passage on their homepage (from bob dylan’s isis) was one of my favorites in my early 20′s.

so- to keep what is a very long story short- i was fairly certain i was going to be really into whatever was hiding behind that homepage.

sure enough- i find these prisms and they are so amazing. they feel familiar to me, probably because they’d fit right into the home i grew up in and the home my mother grew up in. in fact, i’m almost certain my mom and grandma both have one sitting on a small table somewhere nice, where the sun streams through the windows in the afternoon. so it’s only fitting that i keep one in the house i’ll begin call home. any chance i could inherit one someday, mom? please?

the quirky bohemian home of linda and john meyers

this is one of those homes that just makes my jaw drop because it’s original, relaxed, eclectic, cozy, lived in, and stylish all at once. and while i usually gravitate towards more polished spaces- this one speaks to my inner funk.

the design duo’s home in portland was shot for domino’s march 2007 issue and i’ve kept a little post-it note in my copy ever since. these images still resonate with me the same way they did 3 years ago, so i did a little internet scouring to find a few additional images of the space. i found a few gems on apartment therapy and i was thrilled to see the current state of the meyers home; same general aesthetic, with some very inspiring updates! check out the rest of their portfolio here.

whimsical glamor

for your home. and for your feet.

i’m seriously crushing on this living room. so feminine with the whimsy wall art, shiny robin’s egg blue floor, the mix of patterning, and classic furniture. not to mention the wallpaper is perfection!

people think i’m crazy…

… when i tell them we’ve been collecting mismatched china for our wedding in october. i hear things like “so.. the plates are NOT going to match?” and “isn’t that a huge pain in the ass?”. and i politely answer those questions with “yes and yes”.

but look at this —>

makes all the trouble seem totally worth it, right? i found these images at lanalou, a blog i discovered on city sage last night. be sure to check out the rest of the image set over at lanalou, her blog is amazing!

i gave in.

i ordered this piglet print at 20×200 (right at the end of the spending hiatus- whoops!). i’ve been a fan of photographer Sharon Montrose for quite sometime so I was eager to own a print of my own.

this warm weather has me thinking about three things: leafy salads. weekly bouquets from the farmers market. laying by the lake, listening to the radio. {spring is euphoric.}

jetsetting in style…

i’m thinking about how to make traveling a little more enjoyable these days. we’re going to be traveling a lot this summer and if you are anything like me, traveling is exciting only because of the destination. i love the anticipation of jetting off to see a new city, eat exotic food, visit old friends, or lay by the beach. but traveling itself can be less than glamorous. i dread packing and always leave at least one important thing at home.

so i pulled together a few things that get me excited about the traveling part of traveling. bringing a versatile wardrobe, eliminating unnecessary cosmetics and adding a few “comfort” items. and of course, there are a few wildly impractical things added in there, because that’s just how i roll sometimes. {and on that note- this is a not a budget friendly list. i’d like to go find some more affordable swaps for some of these pricier items!}

1. find a suitcase that you love and is well made, like this vibrant globe-trotters suitcase. the same rules apply to luggage as an investment bag. you’ll have these pieces for a lifetime if you choose wisely.

2. a compact wallet that you can keep close to your person like this mini kate spade variety.

3. you never know where you might end up needing to take a cat nap. come prepared!

4. a hat for bad hair days.

5. a button down shirt that you can wear with jeans, skirts, leggings, anything and everything you packed. right now i’m loving the military look paired with a white tee, simple gold necklace and skinny jeans.

6. flats that are comfortable and still make you feel like a lady.

7. two no brainers that i seem to always forget when i travel: a camera and eternally stylish sunglasses.

8. two dressier items (a skirt and statement necklace for example) that you can throw on with a white t-shirt to look casually glamorized in an instant.

9. cosmetic essentials (all very personal but these are mine): perfume, lip balm, tooth paste, hair brush and mascara.

10. a little treat: your favorite dessert and your favorite scented candle.

11. a cute bathing suit. because it really stinks when you are without one and your hotel has a lovely pool! this has happened to me more than once.

so what is your must-have item when you travel? do you have any traveling vices? (mine’s gossip magazines and peanut m&m’s!) i’d love to hear your thoughts!

embroidered art + pretty bedding

it seems like an unlikely combo, but Rachel Castle makes it feel like a natural fit at her shop. i was only familiar with Castle after coming across their adorable polka dot bedding months ago. i was delighted and impressed when i saw her artwork!

rest is blissful!

ah. it’s good to be back. i’m slowly crawling out of my temporary blogging hiatus and i feel so fresh! i slept hard the past two nights and my head feels light and clean. even though my hiatus was forced, a 3 day technology cleanse is going to become a monthly ritual. this week i started and finished a book (eat pray love), caught up on some writing, organized my dresser drawers, and donated some clothes to goodwill. little accomplishments, but life feels back in order. and is it so crazy to think that you find more beauty in the world when you have a peaceful mind?

ok! on to something beautiful and lovely, because that’s what this blog is about. meet laurel hill (aka esser vessel), jewelery designer/artist from portland. i LOVE everything about these gorgeous bobbles, especially the materiality and imperfections you see in the bronze. and i love this sentence from her website: “the pieces are intended to be worn daily and age through wear, thus increasing meaning and attachment.” what better reason is there to buy jewelery?

and speaking of pure loveliness, Joslyn at Simple Lovely has invited me to be part of her Blogger’s Favorites feature, which makes my heart sing! Simple Lovely is my favorite read, the one i always make time for, because she’s just an amazingly graceful and eternally stylish individual. thanks for having me jos, i’m thrilled to contribute. xo
