3 blogs that inspire

it’s 2am and i’m sitting in my hotel room playing catch up with emails, voice mails, projects and to-do lists. or at least i was. so in the spirit of procrastination (which i will immediately regret come 7am), i thought i’d share a few blogs that have been inspiring me lately.

apartment #34 : serious style, amazing taste. i cannot WAIT to see what this girlie creates for her wedding day. she has a great eye for fashion, interiors and design. love.{1} (i bought an authentic straw fedora when i was in downtown sonoma today and i feel as sassy as this pretty lady when i wear it!)

seesaw. i think these ladies hold the key to my heart. not only do they create great letterpress work, they run an *amazing* blog and vintage etsy shop. i can’t get enough of their aesthetic and sense of style {2}

forever is today : a really lovely photoblog by a 22 year old Swedish designer. her observations are beautiful, serene, graphic, and perfect. {3}

i hope you enjoy these, or revisit them, in any case!

pawling press

i have a serious weakness for line drawings. so when i came across pawling press, naturally i fell in love with their line of sweet and simple soft goods. i’ve got my eye on that dinosaur onesie for my future little nephew, who has decided to show up fashionably late. he was suppose to make his debut on Friday but it seems he is taking his sweet time, leaving all of us in suspense! i can’t wait to shake his little hand and say “hi” for the very first time.

love on a friday afternoon

i love this spindly little tree photographed by lerkenfeldt photography

i actually had a tree in my first apartment after college but it definitely didn’t look this elegant. my roommate and i tromped through the woods in search of the perfect little birch tree but we didn’t have the heart to cut down a living baby tree. so we settled on a big dead limb. it had a sort of ugly charm about it and we hung pretty things like post cards and necklaces and notes from it. people thought we were crazy for having a tree in our apartment and i still think they were crazy for not seeing the beauty in it!

listen: nico, chelsea girl

i was first introduced to the singer, model, and warhol muse Nico after watching wes anderson’s movie the royal tenenbaums. she was the ultimate cool, with an imperfect voice which many compared to the deep sound of a cello. after a quick stint as lead singer for the velvet underground, nico embarked on a solo career, collaborating with the likes of bob dylan and jackson browne. she starred in andy warhol films and influenced artists such as elliot smith, stevie nicks, patti smith, björk and morrissey.

her album chelsea girl has been a smoothing way to spend long afternoons at work. download: these days, chelsea girl

a few things i love…

what a big sigh of relief! friday is here. i’ve got a big weekend ahead of me. 5 of my best girlies and I are embarking on a long day of bridesmaid dress shopping. i’m always so humbled when anyone is willing to devoting time (and money) to help us celebrate our marriage. thank you girls, you’re worth more to me than i could ever express.

anyway, while i’m feeling the love, i thought i’d leave you with a few things i particularly liked this week (if your reading this on the homepage it’s time to hit this link to see more images!):

joy found this couch at james merrell portfolio and immediately wanted it. it looks so comfy but i’m not sure i could sell nick on the floral print…

the bad art gone good post by sfgirlbybay was particularly inspiring

these light sweaters from steve alan

pretty displays of jewelry. there’s something about seeing piles of jewelry together that just makes me happy.

have a lovely weekend!

warm + fuzzy

Winter will be lingering around for the next few weeks and if there is one thing I love about winter it’s all of the cozy accessorizing that goes with. Flocks knitted pieces are created from a small flock of sheep in Wales. Each item has an identification tag with and photo of the little sheep who donated his coat to keep you toasty.

good things

anyone want to tell me where november went!? i blink twice and its thanksgiving. but i’m psyched up about turkeys. stuffing. pumpkin bread. and pie… as this year i will also be giving thanks for getting a teeny tiny bit of a break from my very long to do list! things have been excitingly busy around here and i’m looking forward to sharing some of the things i’ve been working on. the good people at cue are hauling a** right now, getting ready to roll out a whole slew of new work (2 years in the making) that we are all anxiously excited to share with the world. i’ve also have some new freelance and blogging opportunities that i am VERY excited to share with you. so sit tight, cross my heart and kiss my elbow, i’ll be sharing good things with you soon*.

* a term i’ve come to use loosely these days.

the messy bun

my hair is reaching the point of being unmanageably long. but i’ve been telling myself i’m too busy to squeeze in a trim (err.. i maybe just a little too lazy…) so during the work week, i’ve been throwing my hair up and letting it lay wherever it pleases.

this how-to guide for achieving that effortless parisian messy bun gives me hope that with a little guidance, just maybe i can keep this lazy habit without looking like a sloppy mess.

p.s: if you haven’t been following joanna’s new project with YSL on finding all things parisian- you must go check it out! (photos by anna wolf)

working proof

working proof is a cool new project from one of my favorite blogs, sub-studio design blog. every tuesday they introduce a limited addition print from artists around the world and a percentage of the gross total go to a charity of their choice. sounds like a win/win for everyone involved.

i just purchased this print, named Fancy Dress by Yasmine Surovec, of the blog a print a day. i’m excited to add it to my collection!

a new view

this weekend was a very special and memorable one for me. a few highlights:

- friday: moved into a new apartment with the best fiance a girl could ask for. we have a great view of the city and enjoyed a gorgeous sunrise this morning.

- saturday: my girlfriends threw me an amazing surprise birthday party on halloween night. i literally was COMPLETELY surprised! it was a crazy good time with all of my favorite people and anna even baked my favorite cake!

- sunday: had steak and eggs for breakfast at good day cafe, beers while watching the vikings win, and a delicious dinner at lucia’s with nick (the Beef Pot au Feu was ridiculous).

i’m so very blessed to have so many stellar people in my life. you guys are the best.

a good guide for all

nick introduced me to an iphone app called GoodGuide a few months ago. it provides information on the health, environmental and social impacts of the products you buy on a regular basis. we use this app fairly often, mostly to compare our normal purchases with alternatives that would be better for ourselves and the environment. nick recently caught an interview with the co-founder on Minnesota Public Radio that gave an interesting look at the company.

one of the reasons he started the GoodGuide was because he discovered a main active ingredient in his daughter’s sunscreen is a suspected photo-catalytic carcinogen.  basically, when the product is exposed to sunlight it becomes carcinogenic.  he was shocked to find this, especially because it is a banned substance in many countries but not in the U.S.

he hopes that GoodGuide will give consumers the power to know, as transparently as possible, what is in the products they consume.

Listen to the MPR article here. Check out the website here and the iPhone app here.

the reception venue

i’m doing some odds and ends today that are wedding related… mainly deciding on a color palette so I can get my bridesmaids-to-be their official invitations (more on those later). i already decided long ago that i didn’t want my bridesmaids to match. they are all so unique in their own right, i want everyone to see the personality and style of people closest to me. SO that means giving them some idea of the color palette and letting them run free.

the space we decided on is very different than the one i had imagined having my wedding in. an industrial type place with lofted ceilings and exposed brick was always at the top of my mind, and then I got roped into the idea of doing ( the some-what-trendy) barn wedding. turns out i’m not a hardcore outdoorsy type and the industrial spaces available left either too many restrictions or too much time and effort to transform. so, we ended up at a mansion. there couldn’t be a space more romantic and perfect for our “great gatsby” inspired evening, i don’t know why it took me so long to come around to it.

the ballroom is surprisingly light and soft, with cool blues and gold tones throughout the fresco painted ceiling, light-gold cushioned seating around the periphery of the room, and an old stain glass window between two sets of french doors.
so we’ve settled on these colors: light silver/gray, charcoal, champagne, pale blueish gray, and a pink champagne. Those are totally made up names for very specific colors, mainly 3 shades of gray, a light gold and a light pink. Oh boy.
