Monochromatic Moment: Tangerine + Coral

Tangerine and coral are everywhere and I’m loving the vibrancy! It adds a little life to neutral basics, don’t you think?

Girl Crush: Mia Nolting

You know that feeling when you visit a blog, view a photo essay, or read a short story written by a stranger and immediately feel like they totally get you? This happened to me when I got a note from Mia Nolting. Truth is, I’ve seen her work all over the web, and unfortunately I had no idea it was all coming from one person. In fact, she’s the artist and illustrator who created the list that inspired my “Feelings” playlist. Mia’s lists are so telling, I had to share them with you. She also has a wonderful body of work here, and prints available for purchase here.

Thanks for inspiring me, Mia!

In The Kitchen: 3 Meals a Day

I’m not one to follow a recipe. Most often, I get inspiration from blogs, Pinterest and cookbooks, then I just kinda wing it. Here are three such meals:

Breakfast // Caramelized Grapefruit

Cut a ripe grapefruit in half. Place on a baking sheet. Sprinkle with sugar. Place under the broiler until lightly browned (5-10 mins)

Lunch // Warm Brussels Sprouts, Avocado & Bacon Salad

Fry three pieces of bacon until crispy. Remove from pan. Crumble when cold enough to handle.
Cut off stems and remove loose leaves from brussels sprouts. Sauté the brussels sprouts in some remaining bacon grease.
When the brussels sprouts have softened, add sliced avocado and stir gently until warmed through. Add crumbled bacon, a squeeze of lime, salt & pepper.

Dinner // Rigatoni with Ricotta and Roasted Mushrooms and Kale

Boil salted water and cook rigatoni.
Slice baby portabella mushrooms. Toss with olive oil, salt, pepper, a few garlic cloves and thyme. Roast at 350 for 15 minutes.
While pasta and mushrooms are cooking, sauté a handful of baby kale leaves in olive oil, sliced garlic and red pepper. Squeeze half a lemon over the cooked kale. Combine all ingredients with 1/2 cup ricotta and toss thoroughly.

Mixtape No. 11: The Naughty Meets Nice Mixtape

I was looking through my “Recently Added” playlist the other day and realized how bipolar my iTunes purchases have been. I’m rocking out to M.I.A’s ballad for Bad Girls everywhere, and the next thing I know I’m listening to the Flamingos doo-wop their way into my head. Oddly enough, the sudden change in musical genre works for me, perhaps because they’re chronologically ordered and relate to a certain time or emotion. In any case, songs speak to the different sides of ourselves, so I thought I’d put together a mixtape that pays homage to my “bad-meets-good girl” taste in music. Hope you like.

Listen: Spotify | 8tracks

1. Prove Me Wrong – Class Actress
2. A Real Hero (feat. Electric Youth) – College
3. Most Wanted – Cults
4. Polite Dance Song – The Bird & The Bee

February in Pictures

It was a good month, friends. There was time to start and complete new projects, reach beyond my comfort zone with work and relationships, and I even found some extra time to dedicate to meditation. It’s amazing what balance can do for the soul! Here’s to more of the same in March. I hope you enjoy the extra day tomorrow!

* A Note: You’ll see I’m already enjoying my 31 Bits acorn layers necklace! 31 Bits was kind enough to offer Wit & Delight a 20% discount on purchases made until Friday March 16. Type in “KATE20″ at checkout and you’re all set.

Bring Books to Kids

My friend Hailee is a true inspiration. She’s traveling to Costa Rica for a family wedding this May and thought she’d use the opportunity to do some good while she was there.

Her goal is to bring 100 children’s books with her to help start a public library in the small town of La Virgen. You can read more about Hailee’s initiative here. She’s included instructions for sending and purchasing books through Amazon.com. I’ve already purchased this Shel Silverstein book! I hope you can find the time to help out this self-initiated project!

Good luck to you, Hails!

W+D Loves: 31 Bits

When I first clicked on the 31 Bits website, I was so taken aback by the gorgeous styling that I almost missed the amazing story behind it.

In fact, 31 Bits was founded by 5 socially-conscious college students with a passion for empowering women to rise above poverty. During a trip to Northern Uganda in 2007, they met women who were making beautiful paper beads, but had no method to sell them. That’s where 31 Bits was born. They create beautiful, versatile pieces from the beads design by women in Uganda. When they first started, they were working with 6 women. It has since grown to 99. Pretty amazing, right?

Take a look at their site. I love their product offering, not to mention the gorgeous styling. Props to 31 Bits, making beautiful things that help empower women.

Food + Music= LOVE

Have you guys heard of Turntable Kitchen’s monthly Pairings Box? It’s a genius concept. This month is particulary cool, considering it was created to inspire couples to get in the kitchen and enjoy some food and music together.

This month Turntable Kitchen collaborated with designer and letterpress printer Jen Merrill, and enlisted iHeartThis, who provided their heart-shaped utensils to be included in each February Pairings Box. Pretty neat!

They are also hosting a huge giveaway today that I’m definitely entering. Watch this video for your chance to win a red Pro-Ject Debut III turntable. Heck yes. Check it out!
