Cavalier Launches Today

The phrase “God is in the details” most certainly rings true for the freshly launched Cavalier Inaugural Collection. I’ve been anticipating more from Cavalier, and they did not disappoint.

Beyond the stunning lookbook, there’s a lot to explore. Some highlights:

+ Hand-stitched leather goods
+ A carefully curated Online Flea
+ Designer Mixtapes
+ Frequently updated Online Journal

You’ll find some really special pieces that would make great holiday gifts. I’m pretty much in love with this leather duffle, it’s the ultimate.

The mix is great for the holiday weekend and is most certainly suitable for listeners of all ages. Hope you all enjoy!

Happy Weekend.

What’s on the docket this weekend? I’m making some pumpkin pie tartlettes, watching Page One: Inside The New York Times, finishing the Jobs memoir and moving on to Didion’s Blue Nights. I love how shorter days gives one an excuse to hibernate and curl up with a book.

Until next week…

Holiday Party Dress

Yeah- I said it. I have the holidays on the brain.

It’s like Christmas barged in here, stole Thanksgivings thunder, and infected me with Holiday Cheer™. I’ve even decided how to decorate the tree, which means I’ve become one of those people I use to hate.

Anyway- the dress. The peak-a-boo slit and flowing fabric means you can indulge in those cookies without worry. I’m always a fan of the high-low look, plus you get a bit of sparkle without looking like a disco ball. Everybody wins.

In The Kitchen: Chicken Pot Pie with Root Vegetables

This chicken pot pie recipe makes your whole house smell so flippin’ good, you’ll want to dive head first into its buttery topping. Chicken pot pie always seemed like a cumbersome meal to put together, but this recipe from Sunday Suppers proves otherwise. I love the addition of root vegetables and sage, it’s sweet and savory all at once.

*Note: I have 16 oz ramekins and this recipe only fills two of them. But there is enough left over to fill four 4 oz ones, which I now jokingly call Savory Shooters. Hey, there IS wine in there somewhere. If you’ve got 8 oz ones, like most people do, you’re good to fill 4 of those.

Chicken Pot Pie with Root Vegetables, c/o Sunday Suppers

Serves 4

Ingredients:
1 sweet potato, diced
1 parsnip, diced
2 sage leaves
5-6 mushrooms, diced
1 white onion, diced
2 cloves garlic, chopped
1 tbsp. olive oil
1 tbsp. butter
2 chicken breasts, diced
½ c. parsley, chopped
2½ tbsp. flour
1 c. chicken stock
½ c. white wine
Premade puff pastry dough
1 egg,
plus 1 tbsp. water

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 400°. Saute potatoes, parsnip, sage, mushrooms, onion, and garlic in oil and butter over medium heat.

2. Season with salt and pepper to taste, allowing vegetables to sweat about 5 minutes.Remove vegetables and saute chicken breast 5 minutes.

3. Add vegetables, parsley, flour, stock, and wine. Simmer 5 minutes and season again with salt and pepper if necessary.

4. Fill four ramekins or baking cups with mixture and top each with a circle of dough about ¼-inch larger than the vessel.Brush tops with egg wash and sprinkle with coarse sea salt. Bake 15-20 minutes or until puffed and golden.

Mixtape No.3 : Get Up & Get Dressed

I don’t know about you, but the sound of my alarm clock might be the lowest point of my day. While that sets the bar pretty low right out of the gate, it still takes the promise of coffee and a hearty breakfast to coax me from bed. So, I start cranking music first thing to shake the morning grumps. It works pretty well, especially if you sing along to the songs that are a bit angsty. What do you listen to while you get dressed for the day?

Mixtape No.3 : Get Up & Get Dressed

1. Broad Daylight – Gabriel Rios
2. Parties in the U.S.A – Jonathan Richman
3. Queen Bitch – David Bowie
4. I’m an Animal – Neko Case
5. Still – JJ
6. Abducted – Cults
7. Not Fair – Lily Allen
8. Planet of Women – Sonny & The Sunsets
9. 15 Step – Radiohead
10. Take You With Me – French Films

Have you guys heard about the 15 Friends Project? It’s the brainchild of Twig Creative, who asked 15 creatives to help create two pieces of artwork that will be auctioned off when completed. I love the concept and can’t wait to see the final pieces, especially with this rockstar line up:

In The Kitchen: Roast Salmon in Parchment

This might be the easiest salmon recipe, ever. It’s great for nights you just need to make a fresh meal for one, and it’s healthy too. Use whatever vegetables you fancy most, just make sure you julienne them nicely. You could also rub the salmon with a variety of spices, but in my humble opinion, a little salt and pepper is all you need.

Roasted Salmon in Parchment Paper

Serves 1

1 salmon fillet
Salt
Pepper
Dried thyme
A few slices of lemon
Red pepper
Zucchini
Kalamata olives
Drizzle of olive oil

Directions
Cut the vegetables into a julienne, and toss with olive oil, thyme, salt and pepper. Season salmon to taste. Put vegetables and salmon into a parchment bag, secure with twine. Bake at 350 for 12 minutes.

Mixtape No 2. – The Kitchen Soundtrack

Music has always been an essential accompaniment to time spent in the kitchen. I cook more often during the colder months, so that’s what inspired this playlist. It’s a mixed bag of genres, with some toe-tapping jazzy tunes and a few super mellow tracks.

The gorgeous photo featured was shot by Caitlin of Roost, a graphic designer who runs one top-notch food blog. At first glance you’d never guess that her recipes are grain/gluten/sugar/dairy free. I’d highly recommend finding a new recipe to try, pouring a glass of wine, and listening these tracks. That’s what I’ll be doing tonight.

Mixtape No 2. – The Kitchen Soundtrack (listen here)

1. I’ve Got That Tune – Chinese Man
2. Stardust – Hoagy Carmichael
3. To Carry Many Small Things- Mina Tindle
4. C’est lui – Josephine Baker
5. Common Burn – Mazzy Star
6. Anything You Want (Not That) – Belle Ruche
7. You – Gold Panda
8. Unknown Brother – The Black Keys
9. The Sweetest Thing – Camera Obscura

W+D Loves: Erica Kirkpatrick

I saw one of Erica’s paintings on Pinterest and was totally mesmerized. Her abstract landscapes are full of emotion and seem to have a quality reminiscent of ink blots tests. You see what you want in each abstraction.

In The Kitchen: Coffee Cake Muffins

I never plan to make muffins. The muffin making usually follows a muffin craving, one that strikes with full force on Sunday mornings. I had an emergency case last weekend, so I turned to my go-to recipe. You can make these bad boys on a whim, which is what makes this recipe so good. As soon as that muffin craving hits, 45 minutes later you’re in sugar heaven and fully satisfied.

I’m sharing my “fancy” MS version of this recipe, but 90% of the time I swap the sour cream for milk, because I rarely have it on hand. I’m sure you could use yogurt here as well. Alas, I hate the stuff.

Bon appetit!

Recipe for Coffee Cake Muffins, adapted from Martha Stewart

The Muffins:
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, room temperature, plus more for pans
1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour (spooned and leveled), plus more for pans
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup sour cream
1 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
2 large eggs

For The Yummy Topping:
1 cup packed dark-brown sugar
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 stick chilled unsalted butter, cut into small pieces

Directions:

Make topping: Stir together brown sugar, flour, and salt. Cut in butter until mixture resembles large coarse crumbs.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter and flour a jumbo 12-cup muffin tin. Whisk together flour, baking powder, and baking soda; set aside.Using an electric mixer on medium speed, beat together butter, sour cream, granulated sugar, and vanilla until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs, one at a time, until well combined. With mixer on low, beat flour mixture into butter mixture.

Divide half the batter among prepared muffin cups. Top with half the streusel mixture, then remaining batter, and top with streusel. Bake 25 to 30 minutes. Cool in pan 5 minutes, then you must eat one!
